Who is Elemental?
The Short Version
Elemental's principal is Kenneth J. Thompson, MBA (please call him Ken). Ken is:
- an MBA graduate (UBC 2002) specializing in business strategy and marketing.
- a technophile with a head for business and strategy — someone who knows how to make technology useful as well as fun.
- a natural communicator and teacher, whether in the area of technology, business, or academics.
- a committed lifelong learner with a knack for acquiring new technologies.
The Long Version
Ken is a native of Toronto, ON, a fact which many in his current home of Vancouver still hold against him.
Ken graduated from York University with an Honours degree in History and English (and Dean's List). While at York, Ken sharpened his skills in research and writing, and in his final year wrote a paper with the dry-sounding title "The Formation of Attitudes concerning Social Mobility in Roman Society, 60 to 140 A.D.". Turns out, it was pretty interesting after all, and won two notable awards for that year:
- the Desmond Hart Memorial Award for best undergraduate history paper at York; and
- the Classical Association of Canada Award for best Classics paper in Canada.
Not content to remain in the cozy confines of the academic world upon graduation, Ken entered the Real World and got himself a Real Job in management. After gaining experience managing businesses of various sizes, he decided he could use some theoretical grounding to supplement his experience, and so he earned his MBA degree at UBC, specializing in Marketing and Strategy. In the process, he achieved a score in the 98th percentile on the GMAT, and won two scholarships and a much-sought-after internship.
After graduating in 2002, Ken founded Elemental as a means to sharpen and expand his skills while applying them to a variety of problems and industries (and also to feed his growing family). Along the way he had also discovered a taste and talent for technology, which became the focus of his consulting practice. He enjoyed his work so much, he's still doing it today.
When he is not helping Elemental's clients, Ken stays busy by studying to keep his skills current, helping raise his toddler son and infant daughter, and, occasionally, relaxing with his wife.
